Open Invitation @Doncaster Vintage Rockbar 21.04.11
As the night begins it seems like any other jam night at The Vintage Rockbar as another shy looking artist steps up for his turn to perform, however this artist is Jonny Gill (Who goes by the name open invitation)
Starting his two part set with original track “Ghosts vs Witches” Open invitation immediately grabs the attention of the audience with his beautiful vocals and emotional lyrics, laying his story out right in front of you with lyrics such as “I’m just a promise that you could never keep”
Moving on to “I was never a giant” the emotion continued in his voice as he continued to let the audience get to know him, all the while never missing a note on guitar it appeared that the small audience in the bar were warming to his music including myself.
The final song for the first half of his set was a cover of Taking Back Sunday’s “New American Classic” with this being one of my personal favourite songs I was on extra look out for any slip ups and found two slight fumbles on guitar but nothing to bring him down on, it was an incredibly well done cover and one I would like to hear again, the only problem I could find was the solo sounded a little too hollow and empty but this is to be expected when you take the song from two guitars to one.
For the final half of the set he began with a cover of One Republics “Apologize” Throughout the set it became apparent that his voice is incredibly versatile and can be adapted for many different genres of music, he covered “Apologize” impressively with good amounts of crowd interaction at the chorus, keeping the attention of the audience.
His next track was “Twilight Princess” an Open Invitation original which he joked was named after The Zelda game had great lyrics and guitar melody that left you wanting more, the story of a young man in love left you hanging on his every word and desperate to know what happens next.
On the whole Open Invitation is a artist I would recommend that everyone checks out and goes to see at least once, his music is meaningful, his lyrics are true and combined they bring something fresh and different to the music scene of today, he is definitely one to watch throughout 2011 and things can only get better for this young musician.
