The first track on the album otherwise known as “Crazy Again” hits the listener immediately with a meaty riff and a story of what we imagine to be the stereotypical view of a rock stars life, the vocalists style is the kind that we have witnesses previously with bands such as saliva, seether with a touch of M Shadows, as he continues to tell us about a man driven to madness by his lifestyle.
As the “Crazy Again” changes to “Armageddon” we are again greeted with a simple drumbeat and badass riff, this time around the singer provides us with a little more energy vocally as he sings about Armageddon, This riff is a personal favourite of mine however I do find it a little repetitive and find it stands out above everything else in the mix a little too much.
For “Psychedelic Lady” I love the build up of the music and the fresh and different guitar tone as the lead guitar is made to stand out more than the rhythm in this track, and enjoyed singing along with the lyrics which fit with the pace of the track and were genuinely exciting. I feel the fast paced energetic sound suits the band alot better than the “lazier” pace of the previous two tracks and actually found myself wanting more by the end of the track.
Basically the first 3 tracks define the first half of the album with its hard hitting riffs and overall musical style, I won't lie it was starting to become boring BUT...;
The second half of the album is a different story completely, mellowing out & making the lead guitar more dominant in the mix added a completely different feel to the album, playing mellowed out melodies the tracks take on a more relaxed feel, even the lyrics aren’t as in your face as with the previous half of the album, this becomes noticeable when you reach “Take a drive” Tracks I would recommend checking out on the album are “I want you back” & “Taste of heaven” which fit my summer mood perfectly and add great variety to the album.
On the whole the self titled debut from Stone Kings is a head on assault of meaty Riffs, distortion and variety, add all the above up and your left with an attention grabbing debut album, I recommend this to anyone looking for a break from the post-hardcore movement taking over the UK.
